Breaking Free

I didn't chase you like you wanted. I didn't run after you when you raced into the alley shadows, like a cat reflecting it's eyes outward, giving itself away. I knew what you tried to do. I don't follow anyone. I made my own way away from you. I was not as feral as you assumed. I rely on more than instinct. Mud had taken your feet not mine. I dared to walk the water all the way home. I watched you crash and burn into the past, igniting every memory on fire until it's a photograph of a lost moment that you were too high and drunk to remember. The streets swallowed you whole with the rest of the city. I watched safely from the water where fire dares not follow.
