The emergence of a great web community
Sometimes buried under the algorithm of, what I like to call mainstream web, you always find those artists that are amazing who you really have to dig for to discover, if you discover them at all. That's why when I learned about the indie web, and tiny web, it's all so refreshing to see people who have amazing ideas, art, music, writing, or even just little personal slice of life kind of blogs emerge.
I'm old enough to have been around the internet when it was becoming more a thing in the 90s where more and more people were having this new box of delights in their homes that connected them to people around the world in an instant. So we all early made our webpages, about anything we loved. Hobbies, art, or fans of things we enjoyed, and set it out there into the world. Than from those days, which seemed so innovative, unique, and innocent, something went off. More and more it became corporate, and people doing it for a living to make money, (I'm not saying you shouldn't make money from art, or anything, but people who chase the dollar signs of the latest trend to make a quick buck, or e-begging streamers putting price tags on pity etc), everyone started to do the same kind of thing to chase algorithms, and so all of that, along with the emergence of A.I art and writing, hell, even some (and I hate the word) influencers are now A.I created, it's like the honest, unique, individual human touches to the internet have been melting away.
This is why, when I decided to share my little hobbies with the world to keep me busy during covid lockdowns back in the day, I tried to find a home for this sort of stuff. But it seemed this sort of thing was not done anymore online. Just people doing their own little thing like back in the day. Then came along me discovering a video on youtube regarding neocities and the indie-web, which lead to tinyweb and so forth. Here I felt so nostalgic for those 'olden days' where people can be individual, express ideas, be creative with no boundaries placed, and everyone is on an equal playing field to explore and learn and enjoy.
So today, I was contacted by another blogger in the bearblog community, Raccoon's Trash Can who is starting up a great community called The Racc Movement were it's small creators, and like minded people all kind of grouped together in a show of support. It reminds me of the old webrings of back in the day. Their blog is really great and inline with what is missing in the mainstream web, and what the spirit of indie web is about. So feel free to go check them out in the links above. Show some love for their blog and idea, and maybe spread the word as well.
Cheers to you all and keep on creating what you love, and keep living the indie lifestyle.
